A Russian sea tanker named as “Varyag”, docks in Manila as part of a 4-day goodwill visit. The government planned this visit for an augment defense cooperation with Russia.
A tugboat guides the vessel’s 600ft missile cruiser. In addition, Russia’s Pacific fleet also deployed a sea tanker name “Pechenga”.
Russia already sent 2 other warships last January to the Philippines namely, Russian destroyer Admiral Tributs and sea tanker Boris Butomatoila. It was the first official navy-to-navy contact between Russia and Philippines.
In February, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte confers the security cooperation between the two countries during a visit from a delegation from Moscow. Palace described this as part of the government’s shift toward an independent foreign policy.
