The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Gina Lopez will not allow the planned construction of an underwater resort and theme park in Palawan.

Environmentalists expressed alarm over the planned construction in Palawan which is known as the Philippines’ ‘last ecological frontier’. They are worried that it would destroy Palawan’s world-famous marine ecosystem.

Nickelodeon is owned by Viacom International Media Networks. Viacom was the first to announce about the resort that would open in 2020. They also said that it would feature restaurants and lounges 6 meters (20 feet) below sea level.

Ron Johnson, an executive vice president at Viacom, explains why Palawan was chosen. He says that the place “is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world today.”

Viacom mentions that the development would “advocate ocean protection.”

But the project has yet to be approved according to The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.
