Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen, Dagupan, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines says that reinstating the death penalty is a “lazy” solution
He also mentions that overhauling the justice system is more workable than re-imposing the death penalty.
Under the death penalty the rich and powerful will most likely get away with crimes in a weak justice system. The poor will suffer more.
But Villegas said that his view against the death penalty does not make the Church soft on crimes.
A report on a substitute bill seeking to re-impose the death penalty to punish heinous crimes was approved by the House justice committee.
The voting for the report ended with twelve approving it, six against it and one abstaining.
A call to all clergymen and women superiors of religious communities, and heads of schools in the archdiocese was made by Fr. Reginald Malicdem, rector of the Manila Cathedral. He asks that a “Prayer Against Death Penalty” be made starting December 11 continuing throughout the Christmas Season.
